Wildfire sweeps through Bardiya National Park
Blaze, now in its second week, intensifies in northern and eastern sections, choking nearby settlements with smoke.Kamal Panthi
A wildfire that began two weeks ago in Bardiya National Park has spread to more than 20 percent of its area, authorities said, with smoke affecting nearby buffer zone settlements.
Residents of Thakurbaba, Madhuwan, Barbardiya and Basgadhi municipalities have been impacted, reporting eye irritation and breathing difficulties. “Children are crying due to burning eyes and discomfort,” said activist Navaraj Dhungana.
The fire started in the northern Chure hills and has spread further south, with the northern and eastern sections worst affected, the park said.
Senior Chief Conservation Officer Ashok Ram said efforts to contain the fire have been hampered by difficult terrain in the Chure region. Nepali Army personnel, park staff, locals and fire engines from Thakurbaba Municipality are involved in firefighting efforts.
