The East-West Highway has been blocked at Dumkibas after a diversion road over the Binayi River was swept away by floodwaters on Thursday morning.
According to the Dumkibas Area Police Office, heavy rainfall in the Palpa region triggered the flood that destroyed the diversion around 8:30am, halting vehicular movement along the key highway section linking Butwal and Narayanghat.
Passenger buses and light vehicles have been rerouted via a road through Hongshi Cement Gate, but heavy and cargo vehicles remain stranded. Police said traffic for larger vehicles will resume only after floodwaters recede and the diversion is rebuilt.
The diversion was originally built about five months ago after a truck collapsed the iron bridge over the river. Since then, vehicles have been using the makeshift route slightly north of the main highway.
However, the diversion has been swept away by the river multiple times, most recently on June 6.
