Thakur group proposes name of the new party as Loktrantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal
Thakur split from the Janata Samajbadi Party following Wednesday’s ordinance.Post Report
The Mahantha Thakur-led faction has changed the name of the party, which is in the process of being registered at the Election Commission, following a split with Janata Samajbadi Party, aided by the ordinance to amend the Political Parties Act-2017.
The party had earlier filed for the registration of the party under the name Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (Loktantrik).
Since the name of the new party is similar to another party registered at the poll body, the faction has opted to change the name to Loktrantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal.
Thakur and Upendra Yadav, the two chairs of the then Janata Samajbadi Party that was formed after a midnight merger between the Samajbadi Party Nepal and the Rastriya Janata Party in April last year, had drifted apart.
While the Yadav faction aligned with the opposition alliance against the then PM Oli, the Thakur faction of the party had decided to join the Oli government.
On July 26, the Election Commission recognised Yadav as the chair of the Janat Samjbadi Party, stripping Thakur of the party chair post.
Thakur then opted to split from the mother party after the ordinance was issued by the Sher Bahadur Deuba government and promulgated by President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
