Nepal flood death toll reaches 289 as hundreds remain out of contact

The death toll from Wednesday’s flash floods has reached 289, with hundreds of others, including foreign tourists, still out of contact as of 1:30pm on Thursday, police said.
Nepali Police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle confirmed the revised death toll to the Post.
The bodies recovered so far include 108 in Chitwan, 62 in Nawalparasi East, 27 in Dhading, 20 in Gorkha, 17 in Rasuwa, 15 in Nawalparasi West, 12 in Nuwakot, and nine in Tanahun.
According to the latest report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, at least 826 people remain out of contact, including residents, security personnel and domestic and foreign tourists.
Of those, 44 are Nepali Army personnel, 28 are Nepal Police personnel and 13 are members of the Armed Police Force Nepal.
Another 644 are tourists, including 517 foreign nationals and 127 Nepalis.
The floods tore through Rasuwa and other districts before surging downstream along the Trishuli and Narayani river systems, damaging settlements, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Government agencies and security forces have been carrying out search, rescue and relief operations in the affected areas, while authorities continue to compile figures on casualties and those yet to be traced.
