Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday said that those involved in the violent acts during a pro-monarchy protest at Tinkune would not be spared.
Speaking at the House of Representatives, Oli warned that even former King Gyanendra Shah would be punished if found involved in Friday’s violence, which resulted in two deaths and extensive property damage, including vandalism and arson of several buildings.
Oli accused former King Shah of inciting the crowd through a video statement. He questioned, “Shouldn’t those who aim to become king again publicly express their view on these successive events?” He added, “Former King Shah issued a video statement on the occasion of Democracy Day (February 19), that incited the crowd. He will not be granted impunity. Those seeking to overthrow the system and restore the monarchy must make their views public on these actions.”
Oli’s remarks prompted protests from lawmakers of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) in Parliament. The party advocates for the reinstatement of the Hindu Kingdom in the country.
The prime minister said that investigations were underway, with the Ministry of Home Affairs looking into the deaths, property destruction, and arson. Detailed reports will be presented soon, he said.
Oli said that violent actions, including burning people alive and committing acts of terrorism on the pretext of a pro-monarchy demonstration, were unforgivable. He also criticised those responsible for disturbing public order, attacking police officers, and vandalising private and public properties.
“The perpetrators of these horrific acts must face severe legal action,” Oli said.
The prime minister informed Parliament about his upcoming official visit to Thailand and participation in the Bimstec Summit. Prime Minister Oli said this would be the first official visit to Thailand by a Nepali prime minister, 65 years after diplomatic relations between the two countries were established.
