Chiranjivi Nepal, economic expert to President Ramchandra Paudel, has resigned from the position following a controversy over a remark he made with regard to printing Nepal’s new map on the hundred rupee note.
The President has approved his resignation on Sunday, said the Office of the President in a press release.
“The President has thanked him for the contribution he made so far while remaining in the position,” read the statement issued by Shailaja Regmi Bhattarai, spokesperson of the office.
Former central bank governor Nepal had reportedly described the government’s decision to print the new map on the note as ‘an inappropriate move’.
A Cabinet meeting earlier this month had decided to replace the old map with the new one while printing new notes of 100 rupees.
Nepal’s remarks courted controversy.
CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli had publicly criticised him for making the remarks against the government’s ‘right decision’.
Nepal government unveiled its new political map by including Lipulek, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura areas within its territory in May 2020. It was later endorsed by the Parliament unanimously. After that, the government has replaced the old map used in all the official documents by the new one while reproducing them.
