A landslide triggered by heavy rains buried a house at Bareng Rural Municipality-1 in Baglung district on Monday night, killing three members of a family.
Police said Bishnu Bahadur Gharti, his wife Bishnu Maya and their six-month-old daughter Soniya died when the landslide buried their home at Lurung settlement. Their bodies were recovered on Tuesday morning.
Heavy rainfall also triggered floods and landslides in other parts of the Bareng Rural Municipality, destroying several hectares of rice paddies, five homes and three bridges. Gupta Prakash Kala, the ward chairman of Bareng-1, said police personnel and the locals were mobilised in the affected areas for search and rescue operation.
The entire settlement of Lurung is now vulnerable to landslides, he added. In Galkot Municipality, floods and landslides swept away a motorable bridge in Harichaur and two suspension bridges in Narethanti.
Several hectares of rice fields and roads were also damaged.
Mayor Bharat Sharma Gaire said they were having difficulty transporting the affected people to safety because the roads and bridges in many parts of the municipality were rendered impassable by floods and landslides.
The flooded Narethanti stream also swept away the building of Area Police Office in Harichaur. The office building could not be protected as most officers were out on search and rescue operation.
Chief District Officer Bed Prasad Kharel said security personnel were deployed to the disaster-affected areas for rescue and relief works.
