The Rastriya Janata Party -Nepal (RJP-N) has been preparing to announce fresh agitation against the second phase local level polls slated for June 28.
The RJP-N, a unified force of six Madhes-based parties, made up its mind to resort to agitation after the talks held with the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) in Singha Durbar ended without yielding any outcome.
“We came for the talks with the hope of finding some conclusion but the ruling parties stuck to their position,” said RJP-N leader Anil Jha. “Apart from the constitution amendment, the government seemed apathetic to other practical issues such as increasing the number of local units in Tarai based on population. That’s why there is no alternative to agitation before us.”
He said that his party has made its position clear during the meeting that they are ready to take part in the elections if the issues were settled.
Leader Jha said that a meeting of RJP-N will decide its protest programme. Ruling out the possibility of holding election in Tarai without RJP-N, he warned of grave consequences if the government tried to impose the elections by avoiding it. He further accused the government of attempting to overshadow the issue by raising the issue of amending the Registration of Political Parties Act.
He claimed that the issues including constitution amendment, release of their cadres detained in connection with the Madhes and Tharuhat movements, declare martyrs to those killed during the movement, treatment to the injured, compensation to the victim family, are yet to be settled.
