The highway traffic had come to a halt after a 37-metre road stretch at Shittalpati-1 collapsed on Sunday night.
Security personnel from the Nepal Army and the Nepal Police were mobilised to construct a 2 km diversion to reroute the traffic.
Superintendent of Police Uma Shankar Panjiyar said the diversion was built for light vehicles and heavy vehicles were asked to use alternative roads to reach their destinations.
Soil failure as a result of the 2015 earthquake and operation of heavy vehicles could have caused the road to collapse, according to road engineers.
The Department of Transport Management was allowing vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes to ply the highway. The highway was constructed with a Japanese grant of Rs21.5 billion. It was inaugurated in July 2015.
