The Cabinet on Friday cleared the way for Nepal Army to build its barracks near Korala on the Nepal-China border in Mustang.

The Army had been unable to build the barracks due to the delay on part of the Ministry of Land Reforms and Management in providing the land.

The ministry was expected to send the file related to the public land to the Cabinet a year ago.

Minister for Land Reforms Bikram Pandey said over telephone that a team of officials would reach Korala soon to survey the land.

The Army was prepared to set up the barracks in Korala in February last year.

The Mustang District Administration Office had allocated 1,000 ropanis of land for the purpose in Lomanthang.

NA Spokesperson Tara Bahadur Karki said on the phone that they would start construction shortly.

The NA plans to build the barracks 30km away from the Korala checkpoint. The area is also the main trade centre for Upper Mustang. The Chinese Army monitors activities on the Chinese side. The northern neighbour has also installed CC cameras to monitor people’s movement across the border.

The Cabinet also decided to provide land to set up government offices including those for Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Quarantine and Customs in the area.
