A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in Tibet was responsible for the destructive Bhotekoshi river flood of July 2016, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) found out recently from the latest satellite images of the Himalayan bio-region taken by Google Earth. DHM hydrologist Binod Parajuli said by analysing the old and new images they discovered the GLOF near Nepal-China border. The glacial lake, roughly 9,000 sq mt in area, had eroded its moraine,
issuing tsunami-like flood downstream that swept clean at least two dozen river side homes and parts of the Araniko Highway on July 5. GLOFs are capable of causing significant disaster of lives and properties. (PR)
