Ganga Maya resumes fast
Ganga Maya Adhikari on Thursday announced another round of fast-unto-death demanding arrest of the murderer of her teenage son Krishna Prasad Adhikari, allegedly abducted and killed by then-rebel Maoists in 2004.
Ganga Maya Adhikari on Thursday announced another round of fast-unto-death demanding arrest of the murderer of her teenage son Krishna Prasad Adhikari, allegedly abducted and killed by then-rebel Maoists in 2004.
Organising a press meet, Ganga Maya said that she had no option but to resort to hunger strike again. “I have no hope that this government will listen to me,” she said from a cabin of Bir Hospital, where she has remained for more than three years. “I don’t care if I die but my struggle is against the culture of impunity.”
Her husband Nanda Prasad Adhikari died while on a fast two years ago. Ganga Maya was persuaded to discontinue with her strike with assurances of justice.
The government in February last year provided her a relief package of Rs10 million endowment and Rs2 million lump sum to postpone her hunger strike.
Concerned over her health and the government’s apathy, a group of rights activists met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi and urged him to save Ganga Maya’s life by implementing the Supreme Court order to investigate into the case by arresting Chhabilal Poudel, one of the accused.
“Defying the SC order will be a mockery of judiciary,” said rights activist Charan Prasai, one of the delegates to hand over a memorandum to Minister Nidhi. “If the government ignores the order, this will prove Ganga Maya’s claim that the government is protecting the perpetrator.”
