Elderly raising grandchild after quake claims three family members
Jit Bhahadur Darai, 71, of Salyantar-2 in Dhading district never thought that one day he would have to suffer the pain of losing his near and dear ones to a devastating earthquake.Hariharsingh Rathaur
But the landslide triggered by the Great Earthquake of April 25 that flattened many parts of the country not only took the life of his son Chet Bahadur, 40, but also his dauther-in-law Masina, 35, and his 11-year-old grandson Anil. Jit Bahadur is currently mourning their loss after they were swept away by the landslide at a forest nearby Buttarpakha after the devastating earthquake. They had gone to the forest to collect firewood and fodder.
Now with their sudden and untimely death, Jit Bhahadur, who used to live a very relaxed life, is suddenly burdened with the responsibility of raising his granddaughter Anjali, who has now become an orphan.
Adding to his woe, Jit Bhahadur has still not found the bodies of his son, daughter-in-law and grandson.
The villagers say that they had seen Chet Bahadur buried to death under a heap of debris brought by the landslip that had swept away his wife and son also.
“All of a sudden a landslide triggered by the earthquake swept the three away and buried them under a huge pile of debris. It is unfortunate that we could not rescue them,” local Shivaram Darai said.
Not even a single person in the village came forward to initiate search and rescue for the three as they were all in a state of shock following the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that caused large-scale death and devastation in their village.
It is not that Jit Bahadur did not go to the site to retrieve the dead bodies of his three family members who perished there, but with no one coming to his aid, his efforts to find their bodies and give them proper funeral have been in vain.
Few days ago, a team of police personnel aided by locals had initiated a search operation to find the bodies of the three, but to no avail.
Sub- Inspector Bharat Dura of the Salyantar Police Unit said they have demanded proper equipments and necessary technical support from the district headquarters to retrieve the three bodies.
Meanwhile, some donors have provided Rs 10,000 to Jit Bhahadur to help him cope with the tragedy and provide education to his granddaughter Anjali. But the government has not provided relief materials to him nor any quake-victims in Salyantar till now.
