Auckland Zoo in New Zealand has launched a donation initiative that provides a donor an opportunity to suggest a Nepali name for its 12-week-old male red panda cub and help rebuild the Red Panda Network’s field office destroyed in a recent fire in Phungling Bazaar, Taplejung.
The fire on March 23 destroyed the office and its equipment, along with houses and shops, displacing over 100 families.
Through the initiative, the Auckland Zoo plans to help rebuild the destroyed office and train locals involved in conservation of the rare animal species. Setting up a “Givealittle” page, the zoo administration has requested generous donors to be part of the initiative. In the page, the zoo has mentioned that one can make a donation within April and suggest name so that the keepers of the zoo will announce the cub’s name on May 1. As of April 17, a total of $ 746 has been donated for the initiative.
The zoo has been supporting the Network, headquartered in United States with offices in Australia, Europe and Nepal, since 2011. The zoo staffers have been carrying various activities, such as training, research and fundraising events, to help the Network conserve red panda. The Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund has also endorsed $ 10,000 to rebuild the Phungling-based office.
Meanwhile, the Network, on its Facebook page, said it started the “Givealittle” page to help support their forest guardians (who conduct essential community-based conservation work) and raise funds to rebuild the office. “In return, we’ll give you the chance to name our 12-week-old male red panda cub!,” the Network has stated.
