According to Ram Saroj Yadav, former lawmaker and Nepali Congress chairperson in Dhanusa, activities of most armed outfits in the region decreased drastically after Superintendent of Police Uttam Raj Subedi was transferred to the district. “Most leaders of armed outfits in the region have already been arrested,” he said.
More than 18 fugitives have been arrested after Subedi came to the district in August last year. Locals say the armed outfits in the region are losing grip especially after lawmaker Sanjay Kumar Sah, the alleged mastermind behind the Janakpur blast in which five people were killed on April 30, 2012, was arrested recently.
Likewise, police said they are making progress in the ongoing investigation into the murder of media group owner Arun Singhaniya.
Police have already arrested Anshu Raain and Eklal Sahani in connection with the murder. Other accused Ram Binod Yadav, Charandeep Yadav, Binaya Kusiyet, Manak Lama and Pawan Lama, however, are still at large.
Similarly, Umesh Yadav—the mastermind behind the murder of media person Uma Singh—and Shyam Yadav, accused of murdering Youth Association leader Mathwar Mukhiya, have already been arrested. Subedi claimed that organisation structure of various armed outfits in the region has been devastated following police crackdown on criminal activities in Dhanusha, Mahottari, Siraha, Saptari, and Sarlahi.
Brijesh Chandra Lal, vice-chairperson of the Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party, lauded police efforts to criminal activities but said police should stand above political beliefs. “Punishing the guilty is laudable but police should not leave criminals on the basis of his/her political allegiance,” Lal said.
Among armed outfit leaders, Akhil Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha Chairman Jaya Krishna Goit is said to be busy in academic work while once feared Nagendra Paswan alias Jwala Singh has been limited to press releases. And, though Rajan Pratap Praphulla of Madhes Mukti Tigers Tarai and Umesh Tiwari of Tarai Cobra remain active, their parties are said to have become vulnerable and weak of late.
