Khanal happy with China’s neutral position
Former Prime Minister and senior CPN-UML leader Jhala Nath Khanal has expressed his happiness at China’s “neutral position” in Nepal’s constitution drafting process.
Khanal praised the Chinese policy, hinting that western countries and India were backing the UCPN (Maoist)-led opposition alliance. “At this period of constitution drafting, some countries are giving advices,” Khanal said at a programme in Kathmandu on Friday, “But China has refrained from wresting any control in that regard. For that I offer my sincere gratitude to China.”
Recalling Beijing’s position not to interrupt into Nepal’s internal politics as stated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his recent visit here, Khanal urged the international community to stay away from Nepal’s internal affairs.
He also suggested the political parties to prepare for maximum consensus as the constitution cannot be drafted through full consensus. “We want to draft the constitution through full consensus, if not, we will make efforts for maximum consensus,” Khanal said, adding, “And if maximum consensus is not possible, we will opt for considerable majority, which is two-thirds majority.” He believes despite the differences among political parties, there is no alternative to moving ahead by seeking a common ground.
Speaking on the occasion, NC leader Ramesh Lekhak said the ruling parties are not in favour of drafting a regressive constitution by putting aside the past agreements.
Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik General Secretary Jitendra Narayan Dev said that no party and leaders will succeed if they do not understand the current situation of the country.
