Gandaki Province Chief Minister Khaga Raj Adhikari on Saturday lost the position failing to secure the vote of confidence during the floor test in the provincial assembly.
A meeting of Gandaki provincial assembly rejected the vote of confidence motion tabled by the chief minister by a majority vote.
A total of 35 votes were cast against the trust motion while 24 provincial assembly members supported the chief minister.
A total of 22 UML and two Rastriya Prajatantra Party assembly members voted in favour of the chief minister in the floor test.
Likewise, seven members of the CPN (Maoist Centre), 27 of the Nepali Congress and an independent lawmaker voted against the motion.
Support from 31 members is required for a majority in the 60-member assembly.
Chief Minister Adhikari sought the confidence of the provincial assembly as per Article 188(2) of the Constitution for the second time after the CPN (Moist Centre) withdrew its support to the government on March 24.
UML provincial assembly leader Adhikari, who became chief minister on January 9 with the support of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, had secured a vote of confidence on January 13.
