A clash among inmates at the juvenile correction centre in Sanothimi, Bhaktapur, left eight inmates injured on Thursday night, police said.
Superintendent of Police Surya Bahadur Khadka, chief of the Bhaktapur District Police Range, said the clash began around 9:45pm inside the facility. Some police personnel were also injured while trying to bring the situation under control.
Police said the injured were taken to Nepal Korea Friendship Municipality Hospital. Seven have been discharged, while one remains under treatment.
The correction centre houses 169 inmates, of whom around 75 are over 18. Police said the clash started among those inmates.
According to police, some inmates assaulted others, vandalised the facility and set parts of it on fire. Firefighters brought the fire under control later the same night.
Police said stones were thrown from inside the centre when officers attempted to intervene. Fearing possible escape attempts, more than 200 police personnel have been deployed to cordon off the facility from outside.
Chief District Officer Umesh Kumar Dhakal said the National Human Rights Commission would also monitor the situation later.
Earlier, on August 21 last year, as many as 297 juvenile inmates in Bhaktapur clashed with security personnel, leaving 20 police officials and 15 juvenile inmates injured. The juvenile delinquents clashed with the police after one of the minors died under mysterious circumstances.
