‘Three Paisa Opera’ at Hotel Vajra
Studio 7 will be staging “The Three Paisa Opera”, an adaptation of the famous German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera,” at its theatre in Hotel Vajra, Dallu.
The play is about an outlaw, Mac the Knife (played by Raymon Das Shrestha), who secretly marries Polly Peachum (played by Sujata Koirala), the daughter of a well-to-do business couple, who have become affluent from their manpower business. The Peachums, adamant about ending this liaison, plan to nab Mac and get him hanged.
First performed in 1928 in Berlin, the play, with its cynical, dark humour, garnered immense success worldwide and became an instant hit. Subsequently, it has been adapted in numerous languages. Studio 7’s adaptation focuses on the moral question the play raises by stripping all the pretensions that values tend to carry and unraveling them for the world to see. Their adaptation tries to capture the ramifications brought about by corruption, debauchery and subversion.
The performance will go on from December 7-14 (except December 10 and 11) and again from December 19-21 at Studio 7’s facility in Hotel Vajra.
