Open-house exhibition at Gallery Mcube
Gallery Mcube‘s open-house exhibition—at its premises in Chakupat, Lalitpur—started from November 29 and will continue till December 3.
One of Pariayar’s works, “Ethos of Surrounding”, tries to define the current state of affairs and involves the display of newspapers published in the same day. One can see them being placed on the terrace and carpeted on the floor of the gallery, where the artist literally wraps himself in the newspaper before tearing himself out of the paper shell. At the end, he pours himself a drink and serves it to the audience as well. The drink, a bitter gourd juice, is there to remind the audience of the harshness of the surrounding they live in.
Similarly, Lama’s exhibit titled “Pasal—The Shop” is anchored in his belief that even though realisations are personal in nature and entail many experiences, both the realisation and the experience of a person are mediated by various collective beliefs that exist in the society. Thus, Lama’s work portrays life as a personal festival that involves an agglomeration of these collective beliefs: akin to a collection of goods in a “Pasal”.
Air_Mcube Local is a residency programme that provides young and emerging artists with an opportunity to work in their studio for six weeks and come up with art works. During the period, the artists are also involved in interacting and exchanging their ideas with art critics, various media personalities, curators and distinguished guests.
For the second season of the series, which is set to begin from December 7, Sabita Dangol and Binaya Humagain have been selected. The open-house exhibition for the second series is scheduled from January 17
