A Nepali migrant worker died while working at the Al Wakrah stadium under construction for 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Anil Kumar Pasman, 29, was hit by a water tanker while working at stadium site on October 22. The contractors have stated that Pasman is the first Nepali to die in a work-related accident. He was 'out of sight of the driver' when he was struck, according to a statement released by the joint venture group of companies operating at the stadium.
The construction work at the stadium was halted to investigate Pasman's death, it is learnt. More than 5,000 workers are employed to build the stadium in the energy-rich emirate that will accommodate 40,000 people.
The contractors have said that they will execute obligations to support Pasman's family. "Pasman’s family has all our condolences. We will look after his family," reads the statement.
The statement further states that the constructing companies have undertaken further caution to prevent such incidents in future at the stadium situated some 15kms south of Capital Doha.
A Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the body overseeing organisation of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, helped in informing local authorities, Nepali embassy and repatriation of the body to Nepal.
Qatar is relying on a large workforce of Asian labourers to build stadiums and related infrastructure for the first World Cup in the Middle East.
