Koirala was rushed to Om Hospital after he complained of abdominal discomfort and shortness of breath on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, the doctors had listed Koirala as critical, saying he had suffered multiple organ dysfunction due to aspiration pneumonia, a condition caused when food and other substances are inhaled.
Koirala has started having juice and water, which is a good sign of improvement, the doctors said.
Dr Hari Kishore Shrestha, managing director of Om Hospital, said Koirala can now sit on his own and has been talking as well. “We have barred people from entering the ICU,” said Dr Shrestha. “He talked to family members and his close aides today. He is out of danger now.”
According to Dr Harish Joshi, medical director of the hospital, Koirala, however, is still suffering from pneumonia. “We hope to manage that in a few days,” said Dr Joshi.
A CT-scan performed on Koirala on Friday did not show any abnormalities, according to the doctors.
Besides a team of experts from Om Hospital, Dr Upendra Devkota, neurologist at the National Institute of Neurological and Allied Sciences; Dr Bhagawan Koirala, cardiologist at TU Teaching Hospital and Dr Arjun Karki, chairman of Critical Care Medicine at the Grande International Hospital, also have been called in to attend to Koirala.
Doctors on Thursday afternoon had taken Koirala off the ventilator.
