Bimal Gharti Magar: A star in the making
Bimal Gharti Magar is one of the few sportsperson of Nepal who has enjoyed stardom at a tender age.
Gharti Magar is currently associated with the youth squad of the Belgian top flight club FC Anderlecht. Gharti Magar has already impressed the Anderlecht club management after scoring a goal against AC Milan U-17 team in one of the friendlies. His rise to the competitive football has won him a nomination in the Popular Player of the Year category of the Pulsar Sports Award.
The footballer getting an opportunity to play in Europe could signal a bright future for Nepali players. Gharti Magar has currently won four caps with the national team. In a year when cricket dominated the Nepali sports, Gharti Magar was able to draw attention with his performance.
After helping Nepal reach the semi-finals of the SAFF Championship by scoring an equaliser against Pakistan, Gharti Magar began his European journey spending two weeks for a trial at the FC Twente, a top flight Dutch club. His return from Twente was followed by the Anderlecht experiecce where he impressed everybody by his football skills.
Gharti Magar, however, has to go through a tough fight to win the Popular PoY award as he is nominated along with country’s renowned sporting figure Paras Khadka, spiker Saraswoti Chaudhary, swimmer Sofia Shah and sprinter Yam Sajan Sunar.
The winner of the Popular PoY category will be declared through SMS votes and facebook likes, the announcement of which will be made during the Pulsar Sports Award to be staged at the Nepal Academy Hall on June 2.
