Celebrating new China’s remarkable achievements, writing a new chapter in Nepal-China relations
As China marks the 77th anniversary of its founding, its ambassador to Nepal, Zhang Maoming, reflects on the countries’ longstanding ties, growing cooperation and joint response to cross-border disasters.Zhang Maoming
In the golden month of October, amid the splendour of autumn, the People’s Republic of China embraces the 77th anniversary of its founding. The past seventy-seven years have witnessed unremitting endeavours and fruitful achievements in China. Under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has achieved two remarkable miracles: rapid economic growth and long-term social stability. We have accomplished the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects on schedule, and are now marching with high spirits on building a modern socialist country in all respects. The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has become an irreversible historical trend.
Through seventy-seven years of strenuous endeavour, China has steadfastly advanced people-centred modernisation. Under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, China has secured the landmark victory in humanity’s largest-scale poverty alleviation, lifting nearly 100 million rural residents out of poverty. In 2025, China’s per capita GDP has reached US$13,800, average life expectancy has risen to 79.25 years, more than 12 million urban jobs are created annually, and the urban-rural income gap continues to narrow. People-centred development, rooted in the principle that development is for the people, driven by the people, and its fruits shared by the people, defines the essence of Chinese modernisation.
Through seventy-seven years of braving wind and rain, China has blazed a path of high-quality modernisation. China remains the world’s second-largest economy, with its goods trade volume ranking first globally for many consecutive years, serving as a major trading partner of more than 160 countries and regions. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China has afforested 680,000 square kilometres of land and restored188,000 square kilometres of desertified area. Its installed renewable energy capacity has surpassed 2.3 billion kilowatts, ranking first globally. China has led the world in the production and sales of new-energy vehicles for 11 consecutive years. All this fully embodies that Chinese modernisation features harmony between humanity and nature.
Through seventy-seven years of forging ahead, China has embarked on the Chinese path to modernisation, pursuing win-win cooperation with all countries. China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of the international order. It is firmly committed to the path of peaceful development, promotes the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, advocates high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and has put forward the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilisation Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative, contributing Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to tackling global challenges and improving global governance.

An open and developing China has always viewed Nepal as a good neighbour, a reliable partner and a sincere friend. Both China and Nepal boast ancient civilisations. Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal. The age-old pilgrimages of Chinese monks and eminent masters traversing west across snow-capped mountains to seek Buddhist scriptures and pay homage stand as timeless testimony to the profound traditional friendship between Nepal and China. In 2019, President Xi Jinping paid a historic state visit to Nepal, during which the leaders of our two countries jointly elevated China-Nepal relations to the Strategic Partnership of Cooperation Featuring Ever-lasting Friendship for Development and Prosperity, ushering China-Nepal relations into a new historical stage.
Over the 71 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Nepal's bilateral political mutual trust has grown steadily, and practical cooperation has yielded fruitful outcomes. China stands as one of Nepal’s key trading partners and the largest source of foreign direct investment. We have granted zero-tariff treatment to 100 percent of tariff lines for Nepal-origin products. The two countries have signed the Framework Agreement for Belt and Road Cooperation. The Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network has steadily taken shape, transforming “high mountains and long roads” into “a close neighbour within easy reach.”By implementing the Global Development Initiative and deepening the synergy of our development strategies, China and Nepal are opening up an ever broader path of mutually beneficial cooperation.
Over the 71 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges between our two countries have flourished in diversified forms, enabling in-depth mutual learning among civilisations. The Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University has cultivated more than 50,000 Chinese-language learners. Cultural and tourism events under the “Three Places, Three Brands” framework—the Chinese New Year celebrations in Kathmandu, the China-Nepal Friendship Dragon Boat Race and the International Mountain Cross-Country Race in Pokhara, and the Lumbini International Peace Festival—have become iconic platforms for popular friendship and tourism cooperation. By implementing the Global Civilisation Initiative, our two peoples grow ever closer to each other, and the tree of China-Nepal friendship thrives vigorously.
On August 26 this year, the devastating mudslide-flood struck the Nepal-China border areas. In response, China promptly delivered five batches of emergency relief supplies to Nepal, provided emergency cash assistance, and dispatched professional teams specialising in tunnel rescue, DNA testing and forensic identification to support Nepal’s rescue and relief work. Climate change and cross-border disasters are common challenges of our times confronting both China and Nepal. China stands ready to work closely with Nepal to implement the Global Security Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative, jointly establish a cross-border disaster early-warning and emergency response mechanism, enhance our joint disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities, and foster a beautiful trans-Himalayan homeland featuring harmony between humanity and nature. Hand in Hand, we shall write a more splendid chapter of our bilateral relations and inject new impetus into the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
