Students protest against suspension over harassment allegation at Manmohan Technical University
Four students barred from campus for 15 days; administration opts for talks to defuse tension.Post Report
Tension flared at Manmohan Technical University in Budhiganga, Morang, on Friday after four students were suspended over allegations of harassing female students.
The situation escalated after the university administration suspended the students following complaints that some male students had teased students enrolled in polytechnic programmes. The decision led to unrest on campus on Friday morning.
According to university sources, the administration decided to bar the students from entering the college for 15 days after consulting with their guardians, citing indecent behaviour towards female students. The incident reportedly happened around four to five days ago. However, some of the suspended students and their parents protested the decision, claiming the students were innocent.
One of the suspended students denied involvement in the incident, although other students alleged his participation. Angered by the suspension, a group of students staged a protest outside the main gate of the university, burning tyres.
The campus area remained tense briefly following the protest, though the college administration said no major physical damage occurred inside the university premises.
The university issued a notice stating it would hold further discussions with the parents in a bid to bring the situation under control. The administration said it would review whether the students were genuinely at fault and seek an agreement through dialogue, adding that a final decision on the suspension would be taken only after the talks.
