The Kaligandaki river flooded a settlement in Parbat district in western Nepal, washing away around 80 houses, while a landslide in neighbouring Palpa district killed one person and left two others missing on Sunday.

The flooding began entering Farse settlement in Jaljala Rural Municipality-8 on Saturday night, prompting residents to move to safer locations.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone was killed or injured in Parbat. Other houses in the settlement remain at high risk, police said.

A joint team from the Armed Police Force Nepal’s No. 25 Chandika Battalion in Parbat and Nepal Police evacuated residents and moved their belongings to safer locations after receiving reports that more houses were at risk.

A detailed assessment of the damage was still underway, Deputy Superintendent of Police Shailendra Thapa, assistant spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, said.

The area has also been without electricity, while telephone communications have been disrupted, making it difficult to gather further details.

In Palpa, a landslide triggered by continuous rain buried a house and a cattle shed in Bhaisekkata of Mathagadhi Rural Municipality-3 at around 4am on Sunday, killing a 75-year-old man and leaving his two daughters missing.

Rescuers recovered the body of Lil Bahadur Gharti Magar, while his daughters Dina Gharti Magar, 17, and Jharana Gharti, 15, remain missing, according to police.

Personnel from the Armed Police Force’s No. 35 unit and Nepal Police, with the help of a JCB excavator, were searching for the two missing people.

Several other houses in the area are also at risk, authorities said.
