Chairman Lingden, Senior Vice-chair Tamang and Chief Whip Shahi held.
Post Report
Police detained Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leaders after they staged a protest inside Singha Durbar, the country’s central administrative hub.
According to Superintendent of Police Apil Bohara, the information officer of the Kathmandu Police Range, RPP Chairman Rajendra Lingden, Senior Vice-chair Buddhiman Tamang, and Chief Whip Gyanendra Shahi protested outside the parliamentary party office situated at Singha Durbar.
“They were taken into custody after attempting to distribute flyers and chant slogans,” said Bohara.
The three leaders have been held at the Kathmandu Police Range, Bhadrakali.
Meanwhile, the party continues its protest in the Baneshwar-Bijulibazar area. Police have issued warnings through loudspeakers after the protesters attempted to breach the security barricades set up to stop protesters from entering the restricted zone.
On Saturday, the home ministry had warned the RPP against violating restrictions, saying that any breach would lead to legal action. The ministry said it was alarmed by public statements from RPP leaders announcing their intent to defy the ban.
The RPP’s Central Executive Committee meeting on Thursday had decided to stage protests in restricted zones, demanding the release of party leaders and cadres arrested during the March 28 demonstration. Those arrested include Senior Vice-chair Rabindra Mishra and General Secretary Dhawal Shumsher Rana, both held in connection with the Tinkune incident.
The government has designated several locations in Kathmandu, including the area around the federal parliament building in New Baneshwar, as restricted zones. Despite this, the RPP had announced its plans to breach the zone at Bijulibazar, near the parliament.
RPP, the fifth-largest party in the House of Representatives, has been calling for the reinstatement of a constitutional monarchy and declaring Nepal a Hindu state. It had previously held a protest at Balkhu on April 8 as permitted by authorities.
