The Parliamentary Hearing Committee on Friday endorsed the names of Nripa Dhwaj Niroula and Nityananda Pandey as Supreme Court justices.

The meeting, chaired by the oldest member of the committee Pashupati Shamsher Rana, unanimously approved their nominations.

The Judicial Council nominated them as Supreme Court justices on September 27. Niroula and Pandey are currently chief judges at the Patan High Court and the Tulsipur High Court, respectively.

During the hearings, both of them presented their action plans and visions they would implement during their tenure as top court justices. Following this, lawmakers raised questions based on complaints submitted at the committee against Niroula. No complaints were filed against Pandey.

Both justices pledged to carry out their responsibilities independently, impartially, and efficiently. They committed to upholding the values of a fair and capable judiciary while adhering to the constitution, law, and established judicial principles.

The five-member Judicial Council, led by the chief justice, nominates judges and justices. The council includes the law minister, the senior-most Supreme Court justice, and two advocates—one each picked by the association and the government as its members. The nominated justices have to undergo parliamentary hearings before their appointments.
