The Nepal Media Society said it is concerned over the remarks by Rastriya Swatantra Party president Rabi Lamichhane towards media operators and journalists.

A statement undersigned by NMS president Shubha Shankar Kandel issued on Monday stated that Lamichhane’s baseless, biased and fabricated accusations and threatening remarks during a press conference held by the party on Sunday, against the Nepali media sector are a serious attack on the freedom of press and expression.

The umbrella organisation of Nepal’s major print, television, radio and digital media platform, through the statement, said that by publicly threatening the media by taking the names of the media institutions and the media persons and warning the media of action with the help of the crowd could lead to an unsafe environment for those institutions and media persons.

“We want to make it clear that Lamichhane and his party should be held responsible for any untoward incident caused by his remarks,” reads the statement.

The organisation has asked Lamichhane to correct his mistake and retract the abusive remarks.

The organisation has also challenged Lamichhane to produce evidence against media institutions and media persons whom he has accused.
