Janamat Party candidate Birendra Majhi has been elected the mayor of Hanumannagar Kalankalini Municipality in Saptari district.
Majhi secured 6,407 votes while his closest rival Shailesh Kumar Sah from Janata Samajbadi Party secured 6,246 votes.
The win marks Janmat Party’s initial steps in competitive politics after it was formed following its leader CK Raut’s decision to drop his secessionist movement.
After campaigning for “free Madhesh” for years, Raut signed a deal with the government on March 8, 2019 to join peaceful politics.
Raut’s Janamat Party was the first to register itself with the Election Commission.
The party’s deputy mayoral candidate Rekha Devi Mandal, however, lost the election to Janata Samajwadi Party’s Sarita Devi Yadav Sipaliya.
Sipaliya secured 6,512 votes, while Mandal garnered 5,982 votes.
