A Nepali man was killed after an Indian police allegedly opened fire at Nepal-India border on Thursday following a dispute over building a culvert over Sano Khola River in Kanchanpur district.
Govinda Gautam, of Punarbas Municipality-8 in Kanchanpur district, died after he sustained bullet fired by Indian Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) inspector of Sampurnanagar station, locals said.
The situation became tense today after the SSB personnel, who came with the locals of bordering Indian town Basahi, opened fire into the air. They were contending that certain Indian Territory was transgressed while digging for the construction.
Gautam sustained bullet when Indian police inspector opened shots during the altercation. He succumbed to bullet injury on his way to the hospital.
The construction of the culvert over the river was started on Wednesday after an agreement was reached following a dispute that ran for over a month.
Security personnel from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed in the area to take the situation under control.
