The English translation of the first Magahi novel, ‘Fool Bahadur’, authored by Jayanath Pati, was officially launched in Delhi on Monday. Renowned poet and diplomat Abhay Kumar translated the book, aiming to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Bihari literature to a global audience.

‘Fool Bahadur’ is significant for Indian literature, and Kumar’s translation has ensured that the essence of the book has remained intact, while reaching a wider readership. The translation has made it accessible for readers all over the world to read Pati’s narrative.

Translator Kumar expressed his joy at the publication of ‘Fool Bahadur’ as a Penguin modern classic, highlighting its importance in the history of Magahi language and literature. He hopes that the translation will pave the way for more works to be translated from Magahi and other languages of Bihar, including Angika, Bajjika, Bhojpuri, Maithili and Surjapuri.

The launch event featured insightful discussions and readings. Esteemed panelists including Indian filmmaker Suraj Kumar, writer Vandana Rag, Milee Ashwarya from Penguin India, and journalists Aditi Chakraborty and Murtaza Ali Khan also contributed to the discussion.

Filmmaker Suraj Kumar commended the translation, noting how well the translator has depicted Bihar’s rich literary tradition and the cinematic potential of ‘Fool Bahadur’. He believes, the novel not only captivates readers with its literary prowess but also promises an exciting prospect for cinematic storytelling.
