Civil society against oppn protestsCivil society members have condemned the decision of the opposition bloc to carry on with the second phase of their protest programmes
Issuing a statement on Monday, they said the decision creates political roadblock and affects public severely.
Sundar Mani Dixit, Birendra Mishra, Bhoj Raj Pokhrel, Charan Prasain, Subodh Pyakurel, Sharmila Karki, Kedar Narsingh KC and Sobhakar Budhathoki, among others, criticised the opposition parties for abandoning the Constituent Assembly and urged them to respect its supremacy in deciding the fate of people. They argued that dialogue is the only solution to the current deadlock.
In their bid to press the ruling parties to draft the constitution based on consensus, the alliance of 30 opposition parties led by UCPN (Maoist) has announced protest programmes, including baton rallies, closure of government offices and general strikes, starting March 19.
The civil society members have expressed concerns that the protests will induce fear and intimidation among people and will violate basic rights to work, study and move around as per one’s will. They also demanded immediate withdrawal of the protests arguing that they will “cause unnecessary troubles to people”.
