‘Saarc must be result-oriented’
The sixth special session of the Saarc Standing Committee, consisting of foreign secretaries of the member states, was held at the Bandos Island of Maldives on Wednesday.
Officiating Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi led the Nepali delegation to the session. Addressing the session, he underlined the need of making the regional cooperation process result-oriented and dictated by the ground realities of Saarc member states, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The session had for its deliberations the agenda of Saarc's engagement with observers, including the question of dialogue partnership.
After detailed discussions on the agenda, it entrusted Saarc Secretariat with the task of conducting a comprehensive study in consultation with member states for consideration by the relevant bodies.
The Nepali delegation included former Foreign Secretary Arjun Bahadur Thapa, Joint Secretary of Regional Organisations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yagya Bahadur Hamal and Under Secretary of Saarc Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mani Ratna Sharma. The regular session of the Standing Committee is scheduled to commence on Thursday. Likewise, on Tuesday, Joint Secretary level officials of the Ministry of Foreign/External Affairs of member states attended the 45th Meeting of Programming Committee at the same venue.
