Army enter semi-finals
Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) edged George Telegraph Kolkata 2-0 to enter the semi-finals of the third Birat Gold Cup here on Sunday.Binod Bhandari
Nawayug Shrestha and Rajib Gurung scored a goal each for TAC in the extra time. The Armymen will now take on the winner of the match between Manang Marshyangdi Club and Three Star club.
Both the teams were unable to score in the regulation play and the outcome of the match was decided in extra time. TAC, who dominated the game, had to wait until the 95th minute to take the lead. Shrestha put the Army team ahead when his 25-yar shot sailed into the net. Gurung found back of the nets in the 103rd minute to seal victory. Gurung connected a free-kick from Santosh Tamang from the edge of the area.
TAC coach Megh Raj KC opined that his team that had played the better but were held by Kolkata outfit’s defense. “We were a much side but their defenders and keeper put on a praiseworthy performance to keep us at bay for 90 minutes,” said KC.
George Telegraph were rewarded with Rs 75,000 as per the new tournament provision where all the teams, including the ones losing in first round are assured of cash prizes. NPC will take on Jhapa XI on Monday.
