Doctors warn crusader may lose consciousness
Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) doctors on Wednesday warned Dr Govinda KC could lose consciousness any time since his health has deteriorated significantly.Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) doctors on Wednesday warned Dr Govinda KC could lose consciousness any time since his health has deteriorated significantly.
Dr KC’s indefinite hunger strike entered 26th day today. The social and anti-corruption activist seeks reforms in Nepal’s medical education.
The government is unconcerned about his sinking health and steadfastly refuses to implement demands.
His health has sunk so much that doctors called a press conference to inform journalists his condition.Resident doctors said Dr KC is under massive risk with high deficiency of glucose. His blood pressure (BP), White Blood Cell (WBC), and potassium have dropped below the minimum required level.
Normal light and noise now disturbs him. He can barely utter words to describe his pain and cannot recognise people he knows. The TUTH has not provided any specialised doctors yet. Resident doctors are doing his medical check-up, according to Dr Laxman Bhusal, one of the doctors attending Dr KC. “We resident doctors attend to him round the clock due to his unstable health condition,” said Dr Bhusal.
The doctors said admitting Dr KC into ICU is priority. They fear he may suffer sudden attacks in the heart due to lack of potassium. Low glucose and blood pressure levels increase the risk of affecting his brain, doctors warned at the press conference.
Despite doctors warnings, Dr KC refuses transfer into ICU.Dr Bhusal said Dr KC refuses ICU services because he sees himself not as a patient taken ill, but a crusader fighting against a sick system. “The high deficiency of glucose and rapidly dropping BP has increased his weakness and have pushed him into delirium stage. If his delirium continues, he could slip into coma,” Dr Bhusal said.Monita Maharjan, a nurse attending to Dr KC, said, “Normal activities within the room irritate him because of his weakness caused by vital mineral deficiency.”
