Govt trying to curtail civil liberties: Deuba
Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has accused the government of trying to suppress citizens’ fundamental rights of peaceful protest by declaring prohibited areas.Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has accused the government of trying to suppress citizens’ fundamental rights of peaceful protest by declaring prohibited areas.
At a programme organised by the party’s central committee on the occasion of 36th BP Memorial Day on Sunday, Deuba said suppression of peaceful protests was against democracy and human rights. BP’s view of not partnering with the communists was relevant, he argued. The NC had joined forces with communist parties in 1990 to end the partyless Panchayat system and again in 2006 against the king’s autocratic regime. The incumbent Congress leadership seems to be regretting the decisions at a time when the communist party leads a government commanding a two-thirds majority.
Deuba recalled that the government he led introduced the medical education bill honouring the recommendations of the Mathema Commission to address the demands of agitating TU Teaching Hospital professor Dr Govinda KC. He asked the KP Sharma Oli-led government to present a bill in line with the ordinance that was in force until July 4.
On the occasion, senior party leader Ram Chandra Poudel said that the NC had not deviated from BP’s thought. “The constitution was promulgated through a Constituent Assembly envisioned by BP,” he argued.
Poudel charged the government with resorting to suppression while ignoring Dr KC’s demand for opening medical schools in rural areas.
