Shahida Bano was elected to the post from Nepali Congress. She emerged victorious by garnering 4,315. Her nearest rival was also a Muslim woman, Jabida Khatun, of Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal.
Following her election Bano expressed her commitment to develop infrastructure like road, electricity and drinking water facility.
Bano was backed by her family, particularly her father-in-law, Habib Khan, when she decided to join the race for the post of vice-chairperson of the rural municipality.
Talking about the success of his daughter-in-law in the local level election, he said that he was proud of her achievement, given how keen she was about joining politics and making a difference in the society.
Tharu candidate becomes mayor
DANG: Narulal Chaudhary, the candidate of CPN-UML, was elected mayor of the Ghorahi Sub-metropolis securing 22,030 votes in Dang district. Chaudhary, who belongs to the indigenous Tharu community, defeated Bhup Bahadur Dangi of Nepali Congress 4,546 votes to become the first Tharu mayor to be elected from Dang. Chaudhary was also elected the VDC chairman of the then Rampur VDC in 2054 BS.
