The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is planning to mobilise around 1,000 students from government colleges as paid volunteers to bring all sections of professions into the tax net. 

Metropolis officials said they have already started meetings with chiefs of government colleges in Kathmandu, including Shanker Dev Campus, Minbhawan Campus, Padma Kanya Campus and Pashupati Multiple Campus, for mobilising students for the purpose. 

“We will launch the programme next month,” said KMC Chief and Executive Officer Ishwori Poudel, adding that campus chiefs have given positive response about the metropolis’ plan.  

These volunteers will be working in two shifts. The volunteers will be visiting households to check whether they had acquired building permits, followed building code and paid tax if they are involved in some kind of businesses. According to officials, the metropolis will mobilise the students for a period of three months and they will be paid Rs 15,000 a month. 

Mahesh Kafle, chief of the Revenue Division of the KMC, said so far 3,000 people have come under KMC’s tax net.
