Drive to control drug abuse, sale in western region

DIG Madhu Prasad Pudasaini on Sunday said the campaign was announced as crimes related to drugs were rife in the region.
“Nearly 80 per cent of the criminal cases that police deal in the region are drug related. Children as young as 12 years of age have been found using drugs and other illegal substances. So we have decided to intervene before the situation spirals out of control,” said DIG Pudasaini.
As part of the campaign, the police administration has decided to coordinate with concerned stakeholders to reach out to drugs users to help them kick their habit, destroy marijuana and opium fields and educate farmers about their impacts on human health and society.
WRPO will also launch a special security measures to control sale and smuggling of drugs and illegal substances and carry out awareness programmes targeting the street children, inmates and other vulnerable groups.
“We hope all sides will cooperate with us in our efforts to build a drugs-free society,” said DIG Pudasaini, announcing the work plan for the campaign.
SSP Basanta Bahadur Kunwar said there was a serious problem of drugs in the districts of Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu, Kaski, Tanahun, Baglung, Syangja and Palpa.
