Bal Ram Jyoti, 28 of Sindhupalchok was held in connection with the murder of Lakpa Tamang, 24 of the same district on the night of May 3, 2015.
An investigation by the Metropolitan Police Crime Division revealed that Tamang and Jyoti were childhood friends staying together in Tinchuli, Kathmandu. Both of them were involved in robbery of houses in the area although Tamang had planned to go abroad soon.
On May 3, Tamang, Jyoti and their other friend Jit Bahadur Tamang had gone out for a drink. The trio returned to their room intoxicated. As Jit Bahadur fell asleep, the duo had left for robbery.
“They could not rob any house that night. On their way back, they found a person sleeping by the roadside. They seized Rs10,000 that they found in his pocket,” said SP Sahakul Thapa, spokesperson for the MPCD. While returning to their room, Jyoti fatally attacked his friend with a piece of rod at Aarubari. Following the incident, Jyoti had been hiding in various places outside Kathmandu.
Tamang was arrested on June 9 from Dakshin Dhoka, Kathmandu. A case will be filed against him, said police.
Fraudster arrested
Six students were duped by a person claiming to be an officer at the American Embassy, Kathmandu. Sidhartha Karki of Thuche, Lalitpur, had taken a total of Rs278,000 from the students promising them visa under “earthquake-affected” quota. He went out of contact after taking the money. Later, when the students realised that they had fallen prey to a fraudster, they lodged a complaint at the Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku. SP Sahakul Thapa, spokesperson for the MPCD, said they arrested Karki from Mulpani, Kathmandu. A case has been filed against him on fraud charges.
