The education sub-committee of the Women, Children, Senior Citizen and Social Welfare Committee under the Legislature-Parliament has called for prompt implementation of higher education policy. 

In the report submitted to the Women, Children, Senior Citizen and Social Welfare Committee, the sub-committee has laid stress on the need for implementing the education policy so as to address the anomalies prevalent in the higher education sector. 

The 11-member sub-committee is headed by lawmaker Ganesh Man Gurung. 

The sub-committee on Thursday handed its report to the House panel with amendments. 

Ranju Kumari Jha, chair of the Women, Children, Senior Citizen and Social Welfare Committee, said the House panel on Monday would discuss the matter with education minister. 

“It our report, the sub-committee has recommended that the process of opening new universities should be carried forward only on the basis of the need and that there must be proper mapping to put in place the provision of earmarking at least 20 percent of the total national budget for the education sector,” said sub-committee coordinator Gurung. 

The report has also made recommendations for setting up an umbrella university service commission for bringing uniformity in the selection of human resources at all the universities and for reducing the financial burden on the state. 

The sub-committee has also called for implementation of the annual academic calendar, ending teacher-student politics, making grants distribution judicious and constituting an autonomous board for ending the trend of arbitrary affiliation to colleges. 

Lawmakers Giriraj Mani Pokharel, Rajendra Pandey and Badri Pandey among others emphasised on the urgent need to implement the policy.
