Encroachment of forest land in the name of building settlements for landless has gone unchecked in the western region.
According to the Western Regional Forest Directorate, 27,258 ha of forest land in the region have been encroached by the so-called landless people. Kapilvastu, Rupandehi and Nawalparasi are among the districts that have lost large swathes of forest land. The people living on occupied property say they will not move out. Instead, they have demanded that the government provide them land ownership documents.
