Raging fires have destroyed around 100,000 hectares of forest in the Far West. Bushfires in Achham, Bajhang, Baitadi, Bajura, Doti, Dadeldhura, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts have been destroying vast swathes of forestland in the past six weeks.
The Regional Forest Directorate estimates that around 100,000 hectares of forest has been degraded as a result.
“Fires in some of the community and national forests still continue,” said Ranger Lokraj Dahal.
According to the District Forest Office, 50,000 hectares of forest have been destroyed in Kailali alone.
Kanchanpur District Forest Officer Shiva Prasad Sharma said Chure areas are most vulnerable to bushfires. Blazes have swept 7,000 hectares of forest in Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve.
Locals reported fires also in the Khaptad National Park. According to official figures, fires have burnt up the park from six places. Around 200 community and national forests in inner Tarai have also been affected by the fires.
7 houses burnt down
SIRAHA: At least seven houses were burnt down at Majhaura VDC in Siraha district on Monday morning. The fire that broke out from a house at 4am had caught the whole settlement, said police. Superintendent of Police Shyam Gyawali said property worth around Rs800,000 was destroyed.
