Cadres of agitating Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) torched the district party office of CPN-UML in Birgunj, Parsa on Saturday morning, police said.

Also, the SLMM cadres briefly staged demonstrations and burnt tyres at the incident site.

The agitators said that they resorted to the arson in retaliation for the alleged move of the UML party office to go against direction of the SLMM not to allow Nepal Youth Association, youth wing of ruling CPN-UML, to organise tea reception in the office premises on Saturday on the occasion of Tihar and Chhath festivals.

Earlier on Friday, issuing a statement, the SLMM had warned the UML party office not to allow the event to take place in its premises.

Meanwhile, the district UML leadership condemned the incident and ruled out its scheduled programme in the premises of the UML party office.
