Art lovers will be happy to know that a number of shops in the Kathmandu Valley offer fine art that can be used as home decorations or turned into clothes.
Binita Basnet Collections is one of the shops in the Kathmandu Valley offering a wide range of paintings that are used as wall decoration and fabric material for making dresses.
“Apart from images depicting traditional lifestyles and nature scenes, paintings reflecting the mood of the buyer have been selling well,” said Binita Basnet, proprietor of Binita Basnet Collections at Kamaladi. “Such paintings are mostly sought after by owners of newly built houses, apartments and hotels.”
One can see a number beautiful paintings on silk displayed at the outlet’s gallery along with women’s clothes depicting various themes. Meditative paintings and floral and floral abstract designs, among others, are popular as wall decorations.
Basnet said meditative and floral paintings could provide a feeling of peace to viewers. “Floral abstracts are customisations of natural scenes that deliver different messages,” said Basnet, adding that there was growing demand for black and white paintings with a grey background.
The paintings on silk are claimed to be long lasting. The colours will not fade, traders said. Silk paintings for wall decoration cost between Rs85,000 and Rs250,000.
Likewise, the store offers paintings that can be worn. There are sarees made of different types of silk like crepe and satin, georgette and chiffon. For youths, the shop offers kurta-salwars and stoles featuring fine art.
Wearable paintings are not only selling well in the domestic market, exports have been soaring too. “We have been receiving increasing orders from the foreign market,” Basnet said.
Painted sarees are priced at Rs8,500 and above while prices of silk painted pashmina stoles start at Rs19,500.
