Environment Minister Vishwendra Paswan said his ministry had proposed granting 90 percent subsidy on solar energy to mitigate the energy crisis in the long run. “We are all set to table the proposal at the Cabinet,” he said during the inauguration of solar micro grids in Khotang and Okhaldhunga on Sunday. “The government is currently providing a 20 percent subsidy.” The cost of generating energy from solar technology is estimated at Rs200,000 to Rs300,000 per kilowatt. “With a favourable policy, we can generate more than 30 percent of the country’s energy needs using solar technology,” Paswan said. He added that the government was planning to distribute 20,000 bicycles to contribute to a cleaner environment. “We have also planned to plant 4 million tree saplings this year.” (PR)
