Relatives of the passengers killed in the Kavre bus accident have refused to receive the bodies, demanding adequate compensation and legal action against the guilty.
A meeting of the bereaved families, transportation entrepreneurs and local representatives of political parties was held at the District Administration Office (DAO) on Tuesday but there was no headway till the evening.
The kin of the deceased and those injured in the crash demonstrated in front of the DAO and at several places in Dhulikhel and Banepa. Beside adequate compensation for each of the dead, they are demanding free treatment for the inured, an end to transport syndicates and legal action against the guilty.
Chief District Officer Balkrishna Panthi said the meeting could not reach a decision over the compensation amount.
“Agreement was elusive as the victims’ relatives demanded extra amount in compensation than what they deserve as per the existing legal provisions,” he added.
The victims’ families vented their ire that the document prepared by the police to hand over the bodies did not assure legal action against the guilty. The bodies are kept at Scheer Memorial Hospital in Banepa. Witnesses blamed the poor condition of the old vehicle and a road in bad shape for the fatal crash.
CPN-UML Chairman and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli reached Dhulikhel Hospital to meet the injured. He inquired about the condition of the six injured receiving treatment there.
