The House, which resumed its business on Wednesday following a deal between the ruling and opposition parties, on Thursday started discussion on the appropriation bill.
Speaking at Thursday’s meeting, Nepali Congress lawmaker Chin Kaji Shrestha drew the attention of Parliament to the damage caused by landslides in Gorkha district.
“Roads in some VDCs of Gorkha have been severely damaged by landslides. VDCs in the upper region may soon be unreachable,” said Shrestha, who is also the chief whip of the main opposition party. “We urge the government to pay heed to these pertinent issues.”
On Saturday, a monsoon-induced landslide buried about 20 temporary huts in the northern part of Gorkha and about 50 families were forced to abandon their huts. Local residents are said to have moved to higher areas.
CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Gauri Shankar Chaudhary urged the government to better prepare itself to face natural disasters such as earthquakes and landslides.
“Since the monsoon-induced landslides cause damage to lives and property every year, the government should put safety of such settlements on priority before disasters strike,” said Chaudhary. In Nuwakot, at least two children were buried to death when their temporary shelter was swept away by a landslide on Wednesday.
