Over the last month, Childreach Nepal has been on the ground in the quake-affected districts, mostly working on relief missions in Sindupalchok. The organisation has sent to the district a team of over 50 volunteers who have contributed more than 3,000 hours of their time in relief efforts, much of which has been devoted to building temporay learning centres. The organisation has been aided in its efforts by the Nepal Army, which has provided logistical and personnel support for constructing the temporary buildings.

The latest temporary learning shelter that the organisation built—for the Shree Chilaune Higher Secondary School in Thangpalkot—was inaugurated by renowned actors and activists Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha Acharya, two of Childreach’s Goodwill Ambassadors. They made the trip to Sindhupalchok along with Lokesh Todi and Amod Rajbhandari, members of the Global Shapers Global Hub, a partner of Childreach, to support the opening of the TLCs and to distribute educational packages.

Childreach Nepal, a registered NGO affiliated with Childreach UK—and working in education, health, and child protection—has also provided relief materials such as tents, tarpaulins, blankets and food supplies to the affected villages in the VDCs in and around constituency number 3 of Sindhupalchok. It has also provided and coordinated medical aid for the affected people, along with helicopter rescues. Recently, they flew a 6-year-old child—Sonam Syangbo from Baruwa VDC, who had badly injured her finger— to a health camp in Melamchi because her village of Yangri lacked even basic medical facilities.

Childreach Nepal will now be focusing on medium-term reconstruction, working with the Department of Education, the District Education Officers, the government’s education resource persons, and local VDC officials to rebuild schools so that children can start classes again. The organisation is working with CARE to ensure that these shelters have gender-sensitive toilets and that they are equipped with enough water and sanitation facilities. Additionally, all Childreach temporary learning centres will be using emergency education supplies provided by UNICEF, to augment kits that have already been put together and distributed by Childreach.

In the coming months, the organisation also wants to run programmes to make teachers and students aware of post-trauma stress, and, with the help of trained professionals, create psycho-social and arts therapy-based activities for children in these temporary learning centres so that they can better cope with the life-altering events they have been through and continue to witness.
